Phineas died at the age of seventy-five on 31 Jan, 1866 at Axminster Road, Charmouth. His death was attributed to "peritonitis" (inflammation of the abdomen)^d2.^a1,d2

He was buried four days later in Charmouth^a1 He was survived by his wife Frances.
