In 1797 Frances made a petition to Trinity House for assistance following the death of her husband William. Trinity House were responsible for the supervision of lighthouses and buoys around the English coast but also distributed charitable funds to those of the seafaring community in greatest need. William, then a shipwright, had been a mate and carpenter aboard the William & Elizabeth under Captain Hart and had died during a voyage to Nevis in the West Indies. In the petition Frances stated that she was left a widow at the age of 34 with three children aged 9, 6 and 2 and that she had no other means of support. It is not know whether her petition was successful. ^f1
