William & Elizabeth

William & Elizabeth is a ship.

William & Elizabeth was a merchant ship that traded between London and Nevis in the Leeward Isles under captain T. Hart. She was majority owned by Lane & Co. She was built in 1770 on the River Thames and had a tonnage of 330 with three decks and a draught of 16 feet when loaded. Damages were repaired in 1785 and thorough repairs made in 1787. When surveyed for the Lloyds Register in October 1790 she was rated second best in class for hull and best in class for equipment. There are at least three other ships with the same name active at the time with different masters: Goodwin, Honeyman and Wood. The William and Elizabeth captained by Goodwin was wrecked off the coast of Grand Cayman on 8 Feb 1794 in a disaster known as the Wreck of Ten Sail.

General Notes
n1:William most likely died in 1796. The William and Elizabeth departed Gravesend on 12 Feb 1796 and arrived 10 May 1796, returning to Gravesend on 6 Sep 1796. The following voyage departed on the 5 Jan 1797 but did not arrive in Nevis until 13 Jun. In Frances' petition to Trinity House she stated that her youngest child was 2 years old. This is probably John who was born 18 May 1794, so for him to be 2 at the time of the petition it must have been made before 18 May 1797. Since there was no way to send a message back to London while at sea, William's death canot have occured during the 1797 voyage.
