Was Corbett Tew William's Father? #
We believe William was born around 1750-68 since we have a marriage for him to Ann Hinson in 1786 in Shalstone, Buckinghamshire. Without his baptism and father’s name we can’t progress much further back. The Tews appear on many other trees on and off Ancestry and most of them claim that his father is Corbett Tew and his mother Sarah, possibly Allen. However we can’t find a baptism record that shows Corbett as the father nor can we find a marriage between Corbett and Sarah.
Corbett and Sarah were having children in Shalstone around that time. We have the baptism entries for Corbett (1755), Mary (1757), Ann (1765) and Thomas (1769) all in Shalstone. We have burial entries that we think are Corbett and Sarah’s, plus further marriages and baptisms of their descendants. It looks like Corbett and Sarah married somewhere else and moved to Shalstone some time before 1755. William was perhaps born wherever Corbett and Sarah were married.
A lot of trees on Ancestry and other sites seem to have erroneous dates for events in Shalstone relating to these people:
- William Tew baptism 1753 or 1756
- Sarah Allan baptism 1731
- Corbett Tew baptism 1717 or 1729
- Corbett Tew and Sarah Allan marriage 1752
We didn’t find any evidence of these when we looked at the microfilmed registers in Buckinghamshire Archives.
We checked them twice on different visits.
In The Buckinghamshire Posse Comitatus, 1798 (1985) (a military census taken in 1798 of able-bodied men in Buckinghamshire) there are four Tues (Tews) listed: John Tue and Thomas Tue, servants; Corbey Tue and William Tue, labourers. Corbey is the Corbett born in 1755, the son of the elder Corbett Tew (who died in 1794). John is the eldest son of Corbey and would have been 19 at the time. William is presumably our William Tew and Thomas is probably Corbett’s other son.
There is some circumstantial evidence that supports William being the son of Corbett and Sarah:
- Aside from William, these are the only Tews mentioned in the registers of Shalstone or close parishes at the time.
- William named his first son Corbett, his first daughter Ann, his second daughter Sarah, his second son Thomas. This fits the traditional pattern of naming the first son after the father’s father, the first daughter after the mother’s mother, the second son after the mother’s father and the second daughter after the father’s mother.
- In his marriage to Anne Hinson, the register mentions he was “of this parish”, as was she.
Despite this, there is no documentary evidence that links William to Corbett.
There are some candidate William Tew baptisms from further afield. We have followed up and discounted a few of them:
- William Tue; bap. 8 Nov 1750, Grendon Underwood, Buckinghamshire; son of John and Anna; possibly married Judith Brazil, 1775, Quainton, Bucks; possible children Elizabeth (1780), Ann (1777), Mary (1786) and John (1783)
- William Tue; bap. 17 Jul 1757, Bubbenhall, Warwickshire; son of William and Elizabeth; possible marriage to Elizabeth Spencer, 1777, Bulkington; possible burial of William Tue, 1781, Bubbenhall
- William Tue; bap. 8 Jan 1759, Twyford, Buckinghamshire; son of Gabriel and Mary; possible burial, 1760, Claydon, Oxon; Gabriel was having children in Twyford after 1760
