The Roses of Aston Mill

This is a work in progress. The last update made was on the 10th September.

We put together a list of the Rose family millers of North Aston Mill based on our research.

The earliest mention is William Rose, who was buried in North Aston on 24 April 16741. In this burial entry he was recorded as “a miller”. William was from Heyford Warren, now known as Upper Heyford. He is mentioned as resident in Heyford Warren in the 1662 Hearth Tax returns for Oxfordshire2 and some time before 1674 relocated with his family to North Aston .

After his death we believe the mill passed to his son Joseph, baptised in 1651 in Upper Heyford. William married a woman whose name is recorded as “Phrisis” which may be Phyllis or Frances. They had five children: Anne, Samuel, Joseph, William and Benjamin. Joseph senior died in 1719 and his burial entry notes his being “of the mill”3.

The next mention of a miller is Joseph’s son youngest Benjamin. In the baptism entry for his daughter Mary in 1718 his occupation is recorded as “miller”4.
