Family History

23 Jun 2024

I’m continuing the search for evidence supporting my hypothesis that the Hinksman baptisms in Twyford belong to a single family and that family includes my ancestor William Hinksman (see yesterday’s entry)

I thought I would look for the death/burial of Mary Bayley.

I found a Mary Hinksman buried 29 Mar 1852 in Wonston, died 25 Mar 1852, aged 99!

I then looked for her in the 1851 census and found her living with her daughter in Wonston:

Mary Taylor, head, widow, age 68, pauper, born Twyford Hants
Mary Hinxman, mother, widow, age 96, annuitant, born Preston Candover, blind1

Mary Hinxman was indexed by Ancestry as Mary Huixman

This is very exciting. It fits the details I have for Mary Bayley, baptised 1755 in Brown Candover.

Mary Taylor could be Mollie/Maria who was baptised in 1779 in Twyford and went on to marry Charles Meeton or Mecton in 1802. I need to see if she subsequently married a Taylor.

I found them also in 1841 in Wonston in an area called Egypt:

Mary Taylor, age 60, pauper, born in county
Mary Hinxman, age 80, ind., born in county2

In this entry Mary was indexed by Ancestry as Mary Henyenan!

I find it interesting that Mary Hinxman is of independent means in 1841 and an annuitant in 1851. Her husband was a labourer so I think it’s unlikely he had a pension. I wonder if Mary was in receipt of her son William’s pension. He died in 1820 in Tobago while serving in the army but I haven’t found any pension information for him. I need to look in the records of deceased soldiers effects in the National Archives (Registries of authorities to deal with effects 1810-1822 in WO 25/2966-2971).

I ordered the death certificate for Mary Hinksman. Wonston is in the Winchester Registration District and the reference was Vol 2c, Page 44:

Death in the Registration District of Winchester & Hursley, Hampshire, 1852, no. 110. Died 25 Mar 1852 at Wonston; Mary Hinksman; Female; age 99; Widow. Cause of death: Bronchitis (certified). Informant was Amy [Vither?] (could not sign name); relation: Not known; residing at Sutton Scotney; present at death. The death was registered 27 Mar 1852.

I don’t know who the informant is. Mary had a daughter named Amy who married a John Hawkins in 1808 so perhaps it is her?

After a lot of fruitless searching I can’t find any connection between Mary Taylor and Mollie/Maria Hinksman.
