We’re looking into the Alcocks, specifically the parents of William Alcock, born 1798 in Newark, Nottinghamshire. He was baptised 24 Dec 1798, son of George and Anne Alcock.

We believe his mother was Anne Leak. We have marriage banns for George Alcock and Ann Leak in Newark on 31 Jan 1796, although she is recorded as Mary Leak:

George Alcock of this parish and Mary Leak of the parish of Clarebrough in this county.

We think Mary is actually Ann Leak because there are corresponding records for George and Ann Leak marrying in Clarborough but they are from the old IGI, so are unreliable. The Clarborough registers are not online. We need to visit Nottinghamshire Archives to be sure.

We think we also have identified Ann in the censuses of 1841 and 1851 where she states her place of birth as Retford, a neighbouring parish of Clarborough. She would have been born around 1767. We also have the death certificate of Ann Alcock, widow of George Alcock, maltster, who died in 1854 in Newark aged 86, which also suggests a birth year of around 1767.

We need to examine the parish registers for:

  1. Marriage of George Alcock and Ann/Mary Leak in Clarborough, 2 Feb 1796
  2. Baptism of Ann Leak in Retford, around 1767
  3. Any other mentions of Alcock or Leak around 1750-1800
