I’ve been researching the Greens who were resident in the east-end of London in the Nineteenth Century. My ancestor was Emma Elizabeth Ann Green, born 1853, who married Philip William Blackborough in 1869.
I found that her father was Robert Cuthbert Green and her mother Sarah Furzey. Robert was a mariner and he does not appear in the census as far as I can tell. Sarah appears after 1861 married to an Alfred Green who, it turns out, was Robert’s younger brother. Robert seems to have died some time before 1861, but after 1856/7 when his son Alfred was born.
I can’t find a death certificate or a burial record for Robert.
However I did find a record of a Robert Green who drowned while aboard the “William & Mary” in July 1857. The record is in the National Archives BT153 series and the entry is visible with a transcription at FindMyPast:

| Several Robert Greens are listed in the Register of Seamen BT116 (but none with the middle name Cuthbert). One good candidate is listed as being from Limehouse: |
