To make progress on the Gilkes I think we need to find more DNA connections for the spouses of the male Gilkes so we can determine which branch our William and John are from.

We looked for Mary Rose’s baptism around 1749 in North Aston. She married Wiliiam Gilkes in North Aston in 1768

After some searching we found Joseph Rose marrying Margaret Buller in Somerton in 1738, just a mile east of North Aston

We saw some other references on some Ancestry trees to members of the Rose family being baptised in Somerton so decided to look further

Disappointed at not finding any Roses we searched with some variations and stumbled over a “Joseph Reese” son of “Bengman” and “Shusanna” being baptised in 1723 in Barford, St. John (image). We looked closer and found it was Joseph son of Benjamin and Susanna Rose - a missing baptism from our reconstruction of the Roses of North Aston. We think this is the Joseph who married Margaret Buller in 1738, although that would make him only 15 or 16.

We searched backwards from 1723 to 1706 and forwards to 1746 to see if we could find any more entries for Rose or Roose but found no others.

We also found the marriage of William Rose and Anne in 1742 in Fritwell:

We carried on looking in the Fritwell parish registers marriages from 1742 (image) to 1754 and back to 1695 - no Roses

We found a DNA connection to Elizabeth Rose who married a George Drinkwater. She might the sister of Mary Rose, parent Joseph Rose and Margaret Buller.

We found a marriage between a George Drinkwater and an Elizabeth Rose in in Tackley in 1772. Tackley is about 5 moles south of North Aston. Elizabeth would have been about 25 if the was the one baptised in 1747 in North Aston
