We’re planning another visit to Buckinghamshire Archives.

These are the things we want to double check in Shalstone (in date order):

  1. Shalstone: search “Register of baptisms, marriages and burials, 1538-1707 (PR_183/1/1)” for any mentions of Tew, Hinson, Fetters, Allen, Harrop (we didn’t manage to search this one last time)
  2. Shalstone: marriage of Corbett Tew to Sarah Allen around 1752 (we found nothing last time, but some people believe it exists)
  3. Shalstone: baptism of William Tew. Must be before 1768, possibly back to 1750? (we found nothing last time, but we should double check)
  4. Shalstone: find Benjamin Fetters baptism, 1767-1773. Parents John and Mary?
  5. Shalstone: some Fitters baptisms, are they Fetters?
    1. John, son of John and Mary, 1769 (may be John who died 1812)
    2. Mary, dau. of John and Mary, 1775 (may be Mary who died 1809)

  7. Little Horwood: marriage of James Feeter and Rebecka Willmer, 1797 (maybe this is a fetters)

While browsing for clues to research in Buckinghamshire Archives, I came across a mention of a Benjamin Fetter being sentenced to death at the Old Bailey in 1779:

HUGH MULVEY, BENJAMIN FETTER, JOHN WILEY, JOHN WOODMORE, and JAMES STEWARD, were indicted for burglariously breaking and entering the dwelling-house of Thomas Farley, on the 16th November, about the hour of ten in the night, and stealing two pair of women’s stays, value 30s, a silk gown, value 40s, a black silk gown, value 10s, three linen gowns, value 40s, a crape gown, value 17s, two quilted petticoats, value 20s, two linen petticoats, va;ue 18s, a woollen petticoat, value 7s, two silk cloaks, value 28s, three woman’s silk hats, value 14s, a linen bed-gown, value 5s, six diaper clouts, value 6s, three pair of laced women’s sleeves, value 3s, and three lace caps, value 8s, the property of said Thomas Farley in his dwelling house.1

Thomas Farley was the owner of the Pickled Egg public house in Cold-Bath-Fields, a district of Clerkenwell in London.

There is a record of a Benjamin Fetter being buried in Clerkenwell in 1781:

  • 7 Sep 1781, burial at St James, Clerkenwell, of Benjamin Fetter, age 20, of School Passage2

Benjamin seems to have been a career criminal since there are at least two other offences at the old bailey.
