S researched Joyce Pennil, her wedding to Corby Tew, the bondsman William Cave

Joyce Pennill was baptised in Shalstone on 7 Nov 1756. Her father was George Pennil and her mother was transcribed as Margaret.

I searched for more Pennils being born around the same time and found these:

Date Name Parents
2 May 1759 Elizabeth
7 Jun 1759 John f: George; m: Hannah
15 Mar 1760 Martha f: William; m: Ann
3 Jul 1763 Hannah f: George; m: Hannah
1 Apr 1763 Susannah f: William; m: Ann
22 Dec 1765 William f: George; m: Hannah
17 Aug 1766 William f: William; m: Ann
10 Mar 1769 Susannah
10 Apr 1770 John f: George; m: Hannah

I then searched for marriages of George Pennill around 1750 ± 10 years and found this one in Wolverton, Buckinghamshire:

  • 28 Sep 1748 George Pennal, yeoman, Shalstone marrying Hannah Cooper, born 1726

Seeing as this marriage was several years before the birth of Joyce, I searched for more Pennils being born around 1750 with father George and mother Hannah and found these:

Date Name Parents Place
6 Jan 1752 Anne f: George; m: Anna Stowe, Bucks
27 May 1753 Thomas f: George; m: Hannah Radclive

I could not find any information about a Margaret. I searched for previous marriages of George Pennil and found nothing. I searched for deaths of a Margaret Pennil and found nothing. I suspect that when we look at the record of Joyce’s birth it may say Hannah and was a transcription error.

I have looked up, but cannot find, the birth of Hannah Cooper. There are a couple in Buckinghamshire but nothing stands out.

Searching for the marriage of Joyce and Corby Tew on Find My Past yields a transcription as follows:

  • 10 Dec 1778 Shalstone, Marriage of Joyce Pennil to Corby Tew Junior of Shabbington, Witnesses Richard Scott and Richard Pipkin

On the original photocopy we received, there was a man, alongside Corby, who presumably was named as a guarantor or similar with regard to the wedding fine of £100. His name was William Cave and I have found out quite a bit about him, and his family.

Searching for William Cave, I found this marriage record:

  • William Cave, born 1722, gent, widower, resident in Eydon, Northants ,married Elizabeth Tayler, born 1724, of Buckingham on 13 Oct 1750

I also found a will/probate for a William Cave, gentleman dated 29 Jun 1841

There is a baptism, in Eydon, of a William Cave on 13 Jan 1722 with a father Roger Cave and mother Catherine Cave.

Searching for other Caves born around this time, and in Eydon, gives the following baptisms:

Date Name Parents
13 Jan 1722 William Cave f: Roger; m: Catharine
28 Nov 1723 Catharina Cave f: Roger; m: Catharina
9 Dec 1724 Roger Cave f: Roger; m: Catharina
28 Oct 1725 Catherine Cave f: Roger; m: Catharina
2 Nov 1726 Thomas Cave f: Roger; m: Catharina
17 Dec 1728 Charles Cave f: Roger; m: Catharina
4 Dec 1729 John Cave f: Roger; m: Catharina
17 Aug 1731 Mary Cave f: Roger; m: Catharina

Also, some other Caves in Eydon around that time:

  • 1676 Marriage of Roger Cave and Martha Brown
  • 8 Oct 1679 Elizabeth Cave baptism, a daughter of Sir Roger and Lady Martha Cave
  • 1712 Marriage between Maria Cave and William Dixwell
  • 2 Jun 1724 Marriage of Richard Cave and Bessey or Besse Bay/Ray

Searching for the marriage of Roger Cave and Catharine/Catharina, I fine one in Sandon, Staffordshire where a Roger Cave married a Catherine Brown. However, the is another record of the same marriage on Find My Past with this transcription1:

Since William Cave was a widower at his first wedding, I have tried to find his first wife. He was born in 1722 and married for the (at least) 2nd time on 13 Oct 1750. He would only have been 28. I assumed he would not marry before turning 18 and so was looking for marriages between 1740 and 1750. There were none nearby.

I found some births of Caves around 1748 in Staveton, Northants to a William and Mary Cave but these ranged from 1744 ( too early) to 1754 (too late) and so I have discounted these.

Other possible marriages are:

  • 1740 Stanmore Great, London; William Cave = Catherine Redwood
  • 1740 Leeds, Yorks; William Cave = Mary Malpas
  • 5 Apr 1741 Grandborough, Warks; William Cave = Jane Cox
  • 17 Oct 1743 New Malton. Yorks; William Cave = Elisabeth Dilliker (both of this town)

I have just realised that it is possible that William married 2 Catherines. It is something I could do more research on but since William Cave is no relation of mine it seems a bit of a waste of time. He is merely mentioned on the marriage between Corby Tew Jnr and Joyce Pennill.

Had a quick search of Northants marriage strays and while, browsing, looking for Caves I made these notes:

  • Thomas Cave of Thornby, a gent, bachelor, married Ann Biggs, a spinster, of Husbands Bosworth on 20 Feb 1798
  • Edward Tew of Eydon, married Martha Jeffs of Priors Hardwick, Warks on 28 Sep 1782
  • Richard Tew of Sulgrave married Mary Young(er) in Turweston, Bucks 1 Sep 1754
  • Thomas Tew of Paulerspury married Sarah Boulton of Hillmorton, a spinster on 5 Feb 1716/1717 in Dunchurch

From another search, I found this marriage of Harriett Pennil of Shalstone, to Richard Bull of Shabbington on 2 Nov 1777.
