I read today that the rector of Shalstone at the end of the eighteenth century was also the lord of the manor, George Huddleston Purefoy Jervoise:

Henry Purefoy died in 1704, and the manor passed to his son Henry Purefoy, ‘a Gentleman possessed of many excellent qualities, and fond of Retirement. He conversed more with Books than men.’ He died a bachelor in 1762, and under the conditions of his will Shalstone Manor passed, after the death of his mother Elizabeth Purefoy, to George Huddleston Purefoy Jervoise, his cousin, being great-grandson of Mary sister of Knightley Purefoy. His name is given as lord of the manor in the Inclosure Award of 1768. He was a clerk in holy orders, and at the time of his death in 1805 was rector of Shalstone as well as lord of the manor.1

He married William Tew and Anne Hinson in 1786 and is also mentioned as the rector on the same page as the marriage of Benjamin Fetters and Martha Arrap in 1801 (though their marriage was performed by the curate, John Risley)

Corbets

I did a wide search of the name “corbett” on Ancestry to see if I could spot anything interesting. I looked at the date range 1720-1760 in England.

I found the burial of a Corbet Coleman in Litchborough, Northamptonshire on 16 Jul 17552. Litchborough is just a few miles north-west of Greens Norton and the same distance north-east of Plumpton (where we have a Corbett Tew being baptised in 1726).

Ancestry has linked that burial to the marriage of a Carbit Coleman[sic] in 1738 in Chacombe, which is about ten miles south-west of Litchborough but is the mentioned by B in his research as the centre of his Coleman ancestors:

  • 25 Jun 1738, marriage of Corbit Coleman of Medford and Elizabeth Bugby of Warmington3

Medford could be Maidford, which is a neighbouring parish of Litchborough.

There is a burial of a Corbit Coleman in 1726 in Sulgrave, which is between Plumpton and Chacombe:

  • 22 Dec 1726, burial of Corbit Coleman4

Ancestry links it to this baptism, also in Sulgrave:

  • Jan 1681, baptism of Corbet, son of Corbet Coleman5
