Today we went to B and L’s to play some card games. B talked a bit about the Tew family history that he had found when he was researching it. He remembered that the Corbett name seemed to come from a Corbett Coleman, father of Susannah Coleman who purportedly married Thomas Tew (we can find no trace of this marriage). The Colemans were in Sulgrave.
When we returned home, S read through the images of the Sulgrave parish registers, available on Ancestry. These are the extracts she made up to 1707:
- 8 Nov 1674, baptism of Elizabeth, dau. of Christopher Coleman Junior and Elizabeth
- 28 Nov 1675, baptism of William, son of Corbet and Susanna Coleman
- 5 Aug 1677, baptism of Mary, dau. of Corbet and Susannah Coleman
- 29 Sep 1678, baptism of Thomas, son of Christopher and Elizabeth Colemen
- 5 Feb 1678, burial of Christopher Coleman
- 15 Apr 1680, baptism of Susanna, dau. of Corbet Coleman
- 1680, burial of Christopher Coleman
- Jan 1681, baptism of Corbet, son of Corbet Coleman
- 13 Apr 1684, baptism of Dorcas, dau. of Corbet and Susanna Coleman
- 5 Dec 1686, baptism of John, son of Corbet and Susanna Coleman
- 15 Feb 1688, baptism of Martha, dau. of Corbet and Susanna Coleman
- 21 Oct 1691, baptism of Isabell, daughter of Corbet and Anne Coleman
- 4 Mar 1703, burial of Susanna, wife of Corbet Coleman
- 29 Nov 1704, burial of Elizabeth Tue, widow
We seem to have bits and pieces of the puzzle, all in little family groupings.
I find the names of the Tews in Plumpton to be very interesting: William and Isabella having children called Coleman, Phillipa and Corbett. Is it possible that Isabella was Isabella Coleman, possibly the daughter of Corbet and Ann Coleman from Sulgrave?
I put the colemans into a small separate tree on Ancestry to explore and found some other trees that had versions of this family, although they had misread Isabell(a)’s name as Harabell.
One tree had some intriguing information attached to Susannah Coleman (b. 1680) which appeared to come from a will or probate. User “Eunice Morris” had her death recorded as APR 1746, ’late of Whittlebury’, Northamptonshire, England (ancestry). This appeared to be taken from a tree by “jtew136”, which has a fuller, but truncated description (ancestry):
Susannah’s will had originally been prepared 0n 02 Sep 1723; by the time she passed away her eecutors named therein had passed away. John Newman had married a daughter of the deceased (Susannah), but the daughter had also passed away prior; John Newman wa [ends here]
jtew136 does not show as a DNA match for Linda, but believes they are directly descended from this Susannah Coleman via this route:
▪ Thomas Tew (1680, paulerspury, d. shalstone) = Susannah Coleman (1680)
▪ Corbett Tew (1729, shalstone – 1794, shalstone) = Sarah Allen (1731 shalstone, -1778, shalstone), m. 1752 buckinghamshire
▪ Corbett Tew (1755, shalstone -1800, shalstone) = Joyce Pennel (1756-)
▪ William Tew (1784-1864) = Elizabeth Ward (1791-1873)
▪ Joyce Tew (1821-1892)
▪ James Tew (1842-) = Elizabeth Simons (1843)
▪ William Tew (1869-1946) = Ida C Sturch (1876-1953)
▪ Cecil Earl Tew (1904-1982) = Catherine Longe (1907-1996)
▪ Raymond E Tew (1929-) = Mary Paziuk (1928-)
▪ jtew136
The indexes of the Northamptonshire and Rutland Probate Index are available to search on Findmypast, but the original records have to be viewed at Northamptonshire Record Office (Archdeaconry Court of Northampton:Wills, Administrations and inventories, and accounts). I searched for Tews in the area
- John Tew, 1713, Paulerspury; number 116
- Thomas Tew, 1722, Paulerspury; number 32
- Thomas Tew, 1723, Whittlebury; number 112
- Susannah Tew, 1746, Whittlebury, widow; number 05 Apr[sic] (findmypast)
There are a lot in Eydon, a parish that features in B’s Tew family tree at an earlier time.
The Susannah Tew could be Susannah Coleman.
We tried to find her in the Whittlebury Parish Registers, even though we have looked at them before. I somehow managed to find the images of the registers this time (I think we only looked at Bishops Transcripts last time). I found her quickly thanks to a little index of time periods covered by each part of the book that the minister had written inside the front cover.
- 22 Sep 1744, burial of Susannah Tew, widow; page 29 (ancestry)
We then went through the whole register from 1653-1722 and found the following. Mary Tew is not new and was seen in the Bishops transcripts.
- 27 Jul 1717, marriage of Peter Tilly [Senr or Tew] and Sarah Verny both of Whittlebury
- 15 Apr 1709, baptism of Mary, dau. of William and Mary Hinson
- 16 Feb 1716, baptism of Anne, dau. of William and Anne Hinson
- 24 Nov 1717, baptism of Mary, dau. of Thomas and Susannah Tew;image 73
