We spent the day looking for William Tew’s baptism, without much luck. We believe he was born around 1750-68 since we have a marriage for him to Ann Hinson in 1786 in Shalstone. Without his baptism and father’s name we can’t progress much further back. The Tews appear on many other trees on and off Ancestry and most of them claim that his father is Corbett Tew and his mother Sarah, possibly Allen. However we can’t find a baptism record that shows Corbett as the father nor can we find a marriage between Corbett and Sarah.

Corbett and Sarah were having children in Shalstone around that time. We have the baptism entries for Corbett (1755), Mary (1757), Ann (1765) and Thomas (1769) all in Shalstone. We also have burial entries that we think are Corbett and Sarah’s, plus further marriages and baptisms of their descendants. It looks like Corbett and Sarah married somewhere else and moved to Shalstone some time before 1755. William was perhaps born wherever Corbett and Sarah were married.

A lot of trees on Ancestry seem to have erroneous dates for events in Shalstone relating to these people:

  • William Tew baptism 1753 or 1756
  • Sarah Allan baptism 1731
  • Corbett Tew baptism 1717 or 1729
  • Corbett Tew and Sarah Allan marriage 1752

We didn’t find any of these when we looked at the microfilmed registers in Bucks Archives last week. We will check again on our next visit though.

I found a web page that listed Tew lineage that included Corbett and William Tew1. The page states that the source of this information is “yvonne5159: ‘Hobbs Family Tree’”. There is an [yvonne5159]https://www.ancestry.co.uk/profile/00af81ff-0003-0000-0000-000000000000) account on Ancestry that might be the source, but that person’s trees are private. However she manages an account for Stuart Hobbs who died in 2021 and that person is a DNA match for S’s mum.

Their tree looks well sourced through a family of Tews from Stoke Bruerne, Northamptonshire up to Charles Tew, baptised 3 Oct 1774 in Stoke Bruerne2. His parents were Thomas and Mary Ann Abbey with siblings Grace (1772), Barbara (1775) and Barbara (1777). Thomas and Mary Ann married 16 Apr 1772 in Stoke Bruerne.

This is where it goes wrong. The tree shows Thomas as being baptised in Potterspury, with father as Thomas Tew (b. 1727 Northants, d. 1776 Stoke Bruerne) son of Corbett Tew (b. 1727 Northants, d. 1794 Shalstone) – clearly wrong.

S made a long list of candidate William Tew baptisms, with different name variations and locations. We reviewed a few of them to see if we could determine what happened to them and eliminate them as candidates.

We checked the parish registers of Plumpton, Northamptonshire at Ancestry again and found a few more Tews:

  • 12 Aug 1689, burial of Joseph, son of Thomas Tew
  • 15 Sep 1695, burial of Ann, dau. of Thomas Tew
  • 2 Aug 1683, burial of Bridget Tew (or Towe), widow

This Corbett Tew is the the current best match for the Corbet Tew who came to Shalston around 1755 and died in 1794.

We then checked the Paulerspury, Northamptonshire registers for mentions of Tew:

  • 31 Aug 1678, baptism of Edward, son of William and Jane Tew
  • 12 Dec 1680, baptism of Thomas, son of William Tew
  • 21 Sep 1681, burial of Mary Tew, widow, buried in Woollen

I also found a spreadsheet of stray marriages published by Northamptonshire Family History society and found some Tews:

  • 29 May 1866, marriage of William Smith, of Northampton, full age, widower, shoe manufacturer, father Robert, shoe manufacturer, and Hannah tew, of Conduit St, full age, spinster, father William, innkeeper, in Bedford Holy Trinity, Bedfordshire

Thomas Tew and Sarah Boulton look like a good match for the Thomas and Sarah Tew noted earlier having children in Paulerspury.
