While working on the last section of my biography of George Henry Chambers I was looking more closely at his son George. My granddad William recalled that George was on leave from the army when their father died in 1923, yet George was working as a wagon man in the 1921 census. So he must have enlisted between those two dates. I have a copy of his marriage certificate dated 1934, age 32, Sergeant Green Howards Lines(?) in Meerut, India. The marriage took place at Command 2nd bn The Green Howards in Meerut.

All the service records of the Green Howards are at The Green Howards Museum in Richmond, Yorkshire. I placed a research request for information about him, hopefully including his service documents. I had to pay £45 for the request and it might not be fulfilled for up to twelve weeks, which seems a very long time. £45 also seems like a lot of money to pay not knowing whether there will be any outcome. Still, it’s done and I’m looking forward to seeing what it turns up.
