Today we thought that we would compile a list of places we could go to look up original records. When we were researching in 2021 there were still pandemic restrictions on record offices and libraries so we didn’t make any visits.

Buckingham Record Office

  • need to find the original parish register entry for for Kitty/Kate/Catherine Whitehead’s marriage to George Tew at Shalstone Parish Church, 1858. She was recorded as Caroline in the online records. See diary entry 2 May 2021.
  • also look for baptisms/marriages/burials in Shalstone and neighbouring. TODO: find out which details we are missing
    • Thomas Tew baptism C.1802
    • Thomas’s father William Tew, b. 1760-70, married Ann (Turvey?). When did he die?
    • William’s father may be Corbett Tew and he may have had a brother Corbett as well.
  • Many of the Buckinghamshire records are available via findmypast
  • We should get an Archives card when we visit, bring ID

National Library of Ireland

  • check Ballymartle parish registers for Dineens, around 1841. See diary entry 18 Sep 2013.

Edinburgh University

  • look in Christian Salvesen Company archives for references to Emil Gustav Hvaal. See diary entry 25 Feb 2021.

National Archives

  • look for original image of William Hinksman enlisting in 4th foot regiment 1799, Edward Hinksman in 1803 and John Hinksman in 1804 all WO25/915. See diary entry 16 Mar 2021.
  • look for original of Jns Hinksman receiving Waterloo Medal, 1815. Reference is Britain, Campaign, Gallantry & Long Service Medals & Awards. See diary entry 16 Mar 2021.
  • Army records for Henry Arthur Alcock. 45th Regiment Sherwood Foresters, stationed at Aldershot in 1881
  • Army records for William Patrick Alcock, C. 1914

Northamptonshire Archives Service (Wootton Hall Park)

  • Northamptonshire Police employment and salary records 1939-1962. For Bernard Alcock.
  • Northamptonshire Police records incl committee minutes, daily occurrence books, civil defence files, licensing 1840-2013 Frank Dunmore and Bernard Alcock
  • NCP/58 a list of Officers’ & Constables’ Declarations, provides information on when officers took declarations and joined the force.

  • 1907: Military photographs owned by William P Alcock. These photographs were collected by Alcock during his military service with the Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Regiment. The photographs were sent to the Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire regimental museum at Wardown Park in June 2014 by D. Alcock, William’s child. From there they were then passed on to the archives. (ref Z1576)3

We found that we could search the Bedfordshire Archives by surname and there seemed to be some Alcocks that we could investigate further (bedsarchivescat)

  • Newport Board of Guardians, workhouse minute books for Bridget Dineen, then Bridget Palmer. She was in Newport workhouse in 1871 census

  • Find “Outdoor Relief, Northern District, For the Quarter ended Christmas 1872” in which I found this: “Bridget Palmer & 2 children, age 30, residing at “Naylors sbp”, receiving 3s weekly relief due to being a widow, 12s having been given. “
